Central Otago at the bottom of the South Island near Queenstown is the world's most southerly wine growing region. For this reason it is unique and produces wines which are also unique and of world acclaim. Soil structures vary dramatically from those of other New Zealand growing regions with heavy deposits of mica and schists in silt loams. The climate is more extreme also and the locals refer to their wines as "Wines With Attitude". Pinot Noir is the dominant grape variety. These extremes, along with the fresh mountain air and the local attitude produce so many world class wines.
